Exhilarating hiking in the beech forest at the Shirakami Mountains, a World Heritage Site

The Shirakami Mountains are a comprehensive term for a vast mountain ous area spanning aomori and akita prefectures.

In 1993, it was registered as a World Heritage Site because of the world’s largest pristine beech forest, which is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna and its natural habitat.

The surrounding area is full of mountain-loving people, from casual hiking trails to authentic trekking trails.

Sightseeing Vol.7 2019/10/22

Feel free to enjoy the beech forest on the well-maintained walkway.

The most casual way to experience the beech forest is the “World Heritage Diameter Beech Forest Walk Road”, which starts at Aqua Green Village ANMON and takes about 2 km and takes 30 minutes to 1 hour.

You can walk around in early spring and when the snow still remains on the sidewalk, and you can enjoy a different look from spring, summer, and autumn.

Because there is a course that can be shortcutd in the lap type, I want to walk well according to the schedule and physical strength.

The promenade is maintained, but because there are not a few points where the footing is bad such as the place where the place where the tree roots come out, shoes are necessary to wear trekking shoes or sneakers which can not be worn.

Because there is undulations, let’s walk at my own pace without rushing.

First of all, don’t forget to get a map while listening to the situation of the mountains at the information center of Aqua Green Village ANMON, which has a bus stop and parking lot.

From there, when you go to the entrance of the promenade, you will find a sign saying “Shirakami Mountains World Heritage Area Entrance”.

The hiking mood is very exciting.

As soon as you enter the mountains, you will be surrounded by rich green with a strong density.

Beech is a deciduous tree that is said to live between 200 and 250 years.

It seems to be a good condition to leave the descendant though pollination seems to be difficult if there are not a lot of beech trees of the same kind in the vicinity because the primeval forest of the beech which is untouched has spread in the Jomon period in the Shirakami mountains.

Therefore, there are a lot of beech which seems to be long of the age.

I can’t help feeling the power of nature.

Look for souvenirs and enjoy the specialty gourmet at the roadside station.

After you go down the mountain, please stop by “Michinoeki Tsugaru Shirakami Beach” in Nishimeya Village, which is about a 30-minute drive away.

Seasonal ingredients such as wild vegetables, mushrooms and apples are sold directly, and there are many souvenirs.

The soft ice cream of fresh honey which was able to be taken from the rooftop of the building is popular, too.

If you want to walk in the mountains in the Shirakami Mountains, in addition to the course introduced this time, there are many courses that can meet the beech giant tree “Mother Tree” which is said to be 400 years old, and a course to tour a beautiful lake, please check it out beforehand.
