Gokayama Village, a World Heritage Site with beautiful harmony with nature

Gokayama is registered as a World Heritage Site along with Shirakawa-go in Gifu Prefecture.

The scenery of the traditional village, which is dotted with the palm-roofed buildings in the deep mountains, is as if time has stopped.

Although the scale is slightly smaller than “Shirakawa-go”, there are few tourists, so you can enjoy a quiet stroll while catching a glimpse of the lives of the people living there.

Traditional Japanese scenery that has been quietly protected in the mountains

Aikuraguchi, the entrance to the gokayama village from Jyouhana Station at the end of the “Merumonta” Jyouhana Line, is operating a bus and takes about 20 minutes.

It’s a short time, but the buses away from town go fast between the rising mountains.

Is there really a person living in such a place through a number of curves and tunnels? The bus stops on the mountain side which is so deep that it becomes uneasy. A 5-minute walk from the bus stop will take you to the village.

The snow-covered mountains are lined with roses, with the triangular form built in a unique traditional architectural style.

I’m overwhelmed by the unrealistic scenery as if I’ve slipped back in time.

In the village, residents live their daily lives, and there are many people who open the interior of the building to tourists, and many people run inns and restaurants, so if you come here, let’s take a look at the inside.

The Ainokura FolkLore Museum, which introduces the history of the village and the buildings of Gassho-zukuri, is also a must-visit.

Enjoy the scenery of the four seasons

The snow-covered winter scenery is also wonderful, but you can always find beautiful scenery in harmony with nature, such as spring when flowers bloom, summer when fresh green and gassho-zukuri buildings shine, and autumn when autumn leaves are beautiful.

You can walk freely in the village, but let’s observe manners and walk so as not to disturb the residents.
